In July 2006 grants of $9 million were given to Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (T-STEM) academics of the Texas Schools. The grants will go to the creation of 12 new academies and centers in the Texas Schools. T-STEM is a program that provides $71 million to various math and science projects at secondary Texas Schools.

The T-STEM project is under the umbrella of the larger Texas High School Project (THSP), which has the goal of increasing graduation and enrollment rates in public Texas Schools. The THSP is funded by both public and private funds in the amount of $261 million. Its partners include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, the Office of the Governor and others.

Why Fund Math & Science in the Texas Schools?

Concerns that both Texas Schools and American students in general are falling behind in the areas of math and science have increased greatly with recent technology. Federal mandates from the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act have also added to pressure for Texas Schools to increase academic performance of its students in these areas. Finally, awareness of an increasing achievement gap between races and economic levels has prompted Texas Schools to make these changes.

According to Texas Governor Rick Perry, “The T-STEM initiative focuses our efforts where they are needed most- in areas where there are a high number of disadvantaged students who are too often left in the shadows of opportunity. This initiative will help us close the science and math gap that exists in our schools today before it becomes a salary gap for tomorrow’s workers, and an opportunity gap for Texas families.”

Methods For Support and Instruction in the Texas Schools

Funds from both the THSP and T-STEM will provide resources, instructional methods, and innovative approaches to better educate students at Texas Schools in math and science related areas. THSP funds are devoted to creating new and redesigned Texas high schools, training teachers, and preparing students for college. The development of five new T-Stem centers will give instructional materials to the schools, offer training to school educators, and evaluate best practices that can be recreated in other Texas Schools.

Charter schools, small schools, and a YES College Preparatory Academy will be funded with the three implementation grants awarded to Texas Schools to open T-STEM academies. Four start-up grants have been provided that will give $480,000 to four new academies that will open in fall of 2007. Educators and Administrators of Texas Schools are hopeful that the launch of the T-STEM programs in 2007 will reverse the trend of the growing achievement gap.

There are many cheap holidays abroad to be found by shopping around since booking agents offer the same deals but often at hugely varying prices. Reports in the news are that there has been a surge in late bookings for the bank holiday weekend. Apparently around 2 million Brits will head abroad so they can secure some summer sun since the outlook for the UK this weekend could go either way.

There are many cheap holidays abroad where you will almost be guaranteed to feel the sun shining in your face, popular destinations for this weekend will be short breaks for the families however if you don't have the constraints of sticking to school holiday terms then you can venture further a field for bargain holidays for this summer period and look to fly after this weekends bank holiday. If you are booking your flights and accommodation separately then it would be wise to book after Tuesday at the very least and if possible in mid September to avoid high flight prices.

Experts have previously advised the cheapest holidays abroad would be in countries outside the Euro zone such as Turkey and Bulgaria since the exchange rate dive bombed and almost hit a one euro to one pound exchange. However the exchange rate has improved greatly for those using sterling pound and there are many countries using the Euro where hotels are offering massive discounts off room prices which offsets the slightly higher costs of holidaying there.

If you are seeking a beach holiday add Spain, Portugal (which have suffered significantly from the downturn) Greece, and Turkey to your list of destinations and for city breaks there are bargain vacations to be found such as travelling to Rome and Barcelona and even New York.

I've heard of massive discounts off hotel prices of up to 50% for hotels in Spain and in New York. You will be able to afford a holiday this year or enjoy a luxury four star hotel!

Remember to shop around, use the internet to compare deals and visit your travel agent to see what there offers are. If you have found great deals on the internet it can be worth bargaining with the high street travel agent to see if they are willing to match or beat your deal.

A USA Walking Holiday in Chicago

"The Windy City" on the shores of Lake Michigan has a rich mix of cultures and a history of music, being famous for its Blues. A Walk in New York

The Statue of Liberty is a popular attraction and an unmistakable icon of the USA. Walking around its base on Liberty Island, you will appreciate the lady's sheer size. From the ground to the tip of her torch is 93 metres, and her standing height from her sandals to her crown (not including her plinth) is 34 metres. Visitors can walk up inside Liberty's structure and look out from her crown, but you should expect to queue for a few hours because of the attraction's popularity.

The statue was a symbol of hope and welcome to immigrants arriving by boat and preparing to walk on American soil for the first time. Their first port of call though was Ellis Island. For sixty years, Ellis Island was the gateway for all immigrants arriving in America. Walking around the museum you will get a sense of the variety of the immigrants' origins, and the desperation and aspirations that brought them to the New World.

You can get a wonderful view of New York City walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. When the bridge was built in 1883, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and there was nothing taller in the USA. Walking across the East River, you can get a good vantage point of Manhattan, seeing as far as Wall Street and the museums of Upper East Side.

You won't believe the bright lights of Times Square. The huge neon advertisements are a spectacle to see, especially at night. This is a vibrant part of the city with the sidewalks and pedestrian area thronging with tourists and street vendors. New York City is so rich with culture that you may struggle to fit in everything you want to see. As well as other sightseeing favourites such as the Staten Island Ferry, Central Park and the Rockefeller Center, there are many world-famous museums, Broadway's shows, and miles of shops to explore while walking in America.

For a very different atmosphere, a train ride out of the city to the New York State countryside will introduce you to rural USA, walking in the historic colonial villages that were settled by Europeans when America was young. You can see some of the oldest buildings in the country and the picturesque villages of the Hudson River Valley.

NEW YORK – Americans are paying more for gasoline than they did last year as the holidays approached — billions of dollars that could go to books, clothes and Barbie dolls instead being spent at the pump.

Gas averaged nearly $2.70 a gallon Friday, the highest of the year — adding bad news to an already fragile economy and making it even less likely that people will spend their way out of the recession.

From last November to January, the average price was $1.86. Even if prices average $2.50 per gallon during the same period this year, Americans will pay an extra $26.6 billion for gas, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service.

Americans didn't have much going for them financially in late 2008, but they did have this: Gas prices plunged by 93 cents per gallon between Oct. 30 and the end of the year. It was like a generous energy tax break, just in time for the holidays.

Thanks mostly to the weak dollar, that's no longer the case. And when a gallon of gas runs from $2.50 to $3, people begin to notice, energy experts say.

People make a "clear emotional connection" between the price of gas and how much they spend on other things, said Wendy Liebmann, who monitors shopping habits through her company WSL Strategic Retail.

"It nibbles out of our paycheck, and there's nothing we can do about it," Liebmann said. "We've got to get the kids to school. We've got to get to work if we're lucky enough to have a job."

As gas prices soared from 2006 to 2008, people became increasingly tightfisted, a survey by WSL found. When gas peaked above $4 a gallon in July 2008, more than two-thirds said they had cut back on other spending so they could still use their cars.

Prices today are a far cry from the peak. Crude oil, which neared $150 per barrel last year, is trading at about $80 now. But drivers are feeling the pain nonetheless.

Anything more than $3 a gallon "is high for me," said Rene Contreras, 24, as he filled his Chevrolet Monte Carlo at a Chevron gas station in Los Angeles that was charging $3.17 a gallon. Contreras added only a half tank before rumbling off.

"I might give lower-income gifts because of the gas prices" this Christmas, Contreras said.

Gas prices are rising even as Americans drive much less than they did before the recession hit, and as the country sits on massive petroleum supplies. A weak dollar is making fuel more expensive.

Oil is bought and sold primarily in dollars. When the dollar falls, investors holding euros, for example, can buy more crude with less. And they have.

Since March 2, the value of the dollar has fallen 18 percent against the euro. In that same period, a barrel of oil has doubled in price, to around $80. Pump prices have gone along for the ride.

Gas prices have risen 17 days in a row, hitting a national average of $2.695 per gallon Friday, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. The last time gas cost close to that was June, during the summer driving season.

And prices will probably stay high because oil companies have become much more conservative about producing fuel after getting burned by the dramatic fall in energy prices last year.

Spending $40 to $50 every time you fill up your tank has a domino effect, said Amy Jaffe a fellow at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.

"That's a new pair of jeans. I'm making a decision between filling my tank and buying a new pair of jeans," Jaffe said. "When we get to that point, you can expect that to hurt the economy."
